Sidney Crosby and Don Cherry
Apparently Don Cherry hates the fact that 16yearold QMJHL superstar rookie Sidney Crosby is havng fun playing hockey. By now all the hockey folks have heard about Crosby's flashy behindthenet lacrosselike goal. ESPN has been showing it, so I'm sure TSN, the Score and Sportsnet have been showing it while I was gone too. Well, it seems Don Cherry took Crosby to task on Coach's Corner Saturday night (available in RealOne the clip is at the 5:30 mark or so of the Nov 29 episode). Watch the clip, which also shows the goal.
So on the one hand you have Cherry complain that Canadian kids are playing a skill game, aren't being creative, and the fun is being sucked out of hockey by coaches teaching systems rather than skill while on the other hand he can't stand the fact that a 16 yearold kid taking the QMJHL by storm is actually having fun. Gretzky used to put pucks in off the backs of goalies' heads, pads or whatever. Noboy complained about him hotdogging. give the KID a break. I'm as old school as anyone, but I think it's getting to the point where we need guys that get excited and celebrate after every goal, no matter how meaningless it is. Bring the fun back to the game. Pro sports are part of the entertainment industry aren't they? So why are people complaining when guys like Sidney Crosby, Ilya Kovalchuk and Jaromir Jagr actually have fun putting on a show for the fans?
I used to be a huge Don Cherry fan. Last year he really started bugging me, but last week pretty much killed Coach's Corner for me. If Cherry hated that goal that much his view of hockey and mine are so out of sync there's no point in watching him anymore.
Hey,http://www.holisteroutlet.cc, Sidney Crosby may be a great talent but that doesn mean everything the guy does is great. To be a truly great player means to have class and respect for the opposition and the fans. He obviously doesn have that yet but hey, he is only 16. He learn. Was the goal a slap in the face for the other team? You bet! Will they be looking for him next time they play? You bet! He learn.
And as for comparing him to Wayne Gretzky, well then this is fitting. I remember watching the Oilers play the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup semifinals (the year the Islanders won their 3rd in row I think it was). Gretzky, Messier and Anderson acted like a bunch of spoiled little kids, taunting the Canadiens and bitching at the referees (I supposed at that time they were spoiled kids too). Gretzky Messeir are complete class acts now. They grew up and Crosby will too, just give the boy some time. Let be objective though, a bogus wrap around goal like that when your 4 goals ahead is just a rash act. Sidney is a kid. He will mature but let not deny the fact that he has too, because he does.
I think that Sidney Crosby is one of the most talented, fantastic, and cute hockey player that I seen. Like really, if the guy is talented enough to be the 4th or 5th 16 year old to play Juniors, not to mention the first to score a goal at the tournament. We let Sidney represtent our country and he did a wonderful job. It just shows the talent this country can bring. He has done nothing but good things up to this point and is one of the best players Canada has seen in a long time. Where do I start? Air Canada employees at Pearson are horribly inept. And to me, NCAA means ACC basketball. Right now that means the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, that anuual event in which the 9 ACC schools play 9 Big Ten teams for bragging rights. Usually.
